Using Awareness Days in your Marketing #LikeAPro – May 2019
For anyone who has had a look at the extensive list of available “Awareness Days“, you’ll notice that there is not just one for every day of the year but a whole hoard of them. Some are purely novelty and light-hearted, like “Dress up your Pet Day” – I honestly don’t like my chances of catching my pet dingo for this day. Some others carry a very important message for a worthy cause such as “World Cancer Day” or more importantly for me “World Cancer Survivors Day”. Then even though some may appear light-hearted, they still have a worthy cause linked in the background, such as “Crazy Sock Day” which was created to raise awareness about Mental Health and Well-being of Doctors (#CrazySocks4Docs).
So you’ve had a look at the list (below), and pinpointed a couple of cool days, but how do you actually use them in your content marketing?
By integrating the hashtags correctly, the incredibly popular and trending awareness days can greatly increase your engagement helping you to reach new audiences. The key to using these days is to choose very carefully making sure the awareness days are relevant to your business or brand. You can have some fun and draw a pretty long bow when it comes to linking to an awareness day, but it will have to make sense and suit your overall message and brand. Anything too obscure simply won’t cut through to your audience.
Planning Ahead
One of the great benefits in using awareness days in your marketing is that you can plan ahead, due to the days being an annual event. So if you use a reliable calendar with a full list of available days, you can choose the most appropriate for your current campaign and schedule relevant posts way in advance. While using the light-hearted awareness days to have a bit of fun in the office and in your marketing may seem like a great idea, it is important to be aware of what’s going on in the world at the time your content is posted. Posting novelty content in the light of a tragic world event could leave a bad taste in your customer’s mouth and leave your company reflected in a negative way.

I strongly recommend doing a quick Google search of the day you’re interested in to see the history and reason for the day to make sure you’re link is appropriate.
