DIY, Done-With-You or Done-For-You Branding – Which Do You Actually Need?

Most people think you’ve got two options when it comes to branding.

You either do it yourself, or you get a designer to do it for you.
And that’s usually where things start to go wrong.

Because there’s actually a third option that sits in the middle, and it’s one a lot of people don’t realise even exists.

DIY is where you’ll probably start.

Canva, templates, figuring it out as you go. Sometimes that’s driven by budget. Sometimes it’s control. And sometimes it’s just not knowing how to explain what you want, so it feels easier to just have a crack yourself.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It gets things moving.

But without clear direction, it can turn into a lot of trial and error. Things look nice, but they don’t quite connect. The branding shifts depending on the day. And you end up doing more work than you expected, for a result that still feels a bit off.

On the other end is done-for-you.

That’s where you hand it over completely. I take what’s in your head, translate it, and do all the heavy lifting. The design, the artwork, the build. That’s usually the right fit when the project is bigger, or when you know you want it done properly and you don’t have the time, or the interest, to be creating it yourself.

But even then, it’s not about me telling you what you should have. It’s about working out what you’re trying to achieve and guiding it in a direction that actually works for you.

But with me, there’s another option in the middle - done-with-you.

This is where we work on it together. You’re still involved. You’re still creating if you want to. But now you’ve got direction, guidance, and someone translating your ideas into something that actually holds together.

Sometimes that means I’m tweaking what you’ve already done so it feels more polished. Sometimes it’s helping you make decisions before you start so you don’t end up redesigning everything three times. Sometimes it’s just being there to sense-check what you’re doing so you don’t disappear down a Canva rabbit hole.

It’s flexible. As much or as little help as you need.

Most designers don’t work that way. It’s either full control or nothing. And if you can’t afford to hand everything over, you’ll just end up doing it all yourself anyway.

I’d rather meet you in the middle and get a better result.

So if you’re trying to work out what kind of help you actually need, it’s not just about budget. It’s about where you’re at.

  • Do you have a clear direction but need help executing it?
  • Do you have ideas but can’t quite translate them into something that works?
  • Do you want to learn how to do it properly while you’re doing it?
  • Or do you just want it off your plate completely?

There’s no right answer. But there are more options than you might think. And sometimes the best place to start isn’t choosing a service. It’s working out what kind of support will actually move you forward.
