Why do some small business Reels work and others don’t?
Usually because the ones that work feel human. They get to the point quickly, they’ve got some personality behind them, and they’re not trying so hard to look like a polished ad that they forget to actually be interesting.
What a lot of small businesses are struggling with is that Reels take up so much brain energy, simply because everyone feels like they need to “do them properly”. So instead of just showing something real, you overthink them into lifeless little TV commercials.
And honestly, most people scroll straight past that stuff. Have a think about what you’re scrolling past and what you're stopping to look at.
People stop for people
The things that usually stop me scrolling are humour, relatable moments, rescue puppies (I know totally unrelated), useful tips, behind-the-scenes bits, or just seeing someone be a real person instead of sounding like they swallowed a social media script.
You know the ones.
“You’ll never believe this…”
“I bet you didn’t know this…”
“Here are 3 things you MUST do…”
Everything starts sounding the same after a while.
What actually works better for small businesses is all that stuff you think is too boring to post.
The little process behind the scenes. A quick explanation. A common mistake customers make. Something frustrating or funny that happens in your day. A different viewpoint on something people in your industry just accept as normal.
Because your audience doesn’t see your world every day the way you do. The things that feel ordinary to you are actually the things they’ll find really interesting. And it’s only 15 seconds.
Also, the Reel itself doesn’t need to be complicated - you’re not making a Netflix movie.
Shorter is usually better
Fifteen seconds is plenty. But you need to lock your audience in within the first few seconds or they’re gone. If it takes too long to get to the point, they’ll just keep scrolling.
And don't go over-branding everything. Yes I did say that out loud. Over-branding just makes it feel more like an ad. Keep the branding subtle throughout the Reel and save the logo hit for the end if you want one. Even the music matters, because the style and feel of the audio should still reflect your brand personality.
And probably the biggest thing of all… stop overthinking them.
The best Reel is usually the one you nearly didn’t post. Or the half-finished one sitting in your phone right now because you convinced yourself it wasn’t polished enough.
People connect with people. Especially in small business.
They want to feel like there’s an actual human behind the business, not a content machine trying to game the algorithm.
And no, every Reel doesn’t need a hard sell or a giant call to action either. Reels are more about familiarity than conversion. They help people get a feel for who you are before they ever buy from you.
